The EM4423 corresponds to the latest generation of EM microelectronic contactless devices, bringing innovative features to the NFC and UHF EPC worlds. The chip combines two functions in a single die: UHF EPC technology is used for long-distance applications, and NFC technology is used to exchange data at close range. Both protocols share a common UID.
Target applications and market segments include retail, product certification or NFC smart posters.
The EM4423-based tag brings several benefits through the UHF communication interface: inventory counting, product returns and consumer privacy. By using NFC-enabled smartphones, the same tags also enable new marketing services such as product information or loyalty programs.
The chip is a dual-band device that supports ISO / IEC 14443 Type A, NFC Forum Type 2 specifications, ISO / IEC 18000-63 and EPC Gen2 V2. Most importantly, additional features have been added to provide chip privacy. On the NFC interface side, the smart counter increments its value each time the end user reads an NFC message.
Each chip is given 96 unique unidentifiable unique identifiers (UIDs) at the time of production to ensure complete traceability. Both RF protocols use the same UID number. In the ISO / IEC 14443 anti-collision process, the transponder chip sends back 7 bytes, the 96-bit portion.
The EM4423 provides two non-volatile memories for access by two RF air interfaces. Two memories are partitioned to implement multiple applications. Each chip comes pre-programmed with 96-bit EPC encoding to support multi-vendor chip serialization (MCS).
The EM4423 supports an optional BlockWrite command for fast encoding of the 96-bit EPC. The EM4423 also supports optional non-traceable commands to hide part of the tag's memory.
